Project Updates

March 2023

The YRWSP is nearing completion! The entire pipeline has now been installed. Commissioning of the water treatment plant’s equipment continues, and startup of the new infrastructure is scheduled to begin in a few months.

Earlier this year, the Project was featured in WaterWorld, a publication dedicated to delivering up-to-date information on the municipal water industry. View the article.

August 2022 | Work in Progress

The YRWSP is currently under construction and includes the installation of a water supply pipeline that crosses Chinkapin Creek at the headwaters of Lake Twitty, just south of New Salem Road. The City of Monroe will assist Union County with the construction of this crossing by temporarily lowering the water levels in the lake through a City-owned dam. Construction activity will occur between September and November 2022.

October 2020 | WE’VE BROKEN GROUND!

In early October, the project team hosted groundbreaking ceremonies at the future sites of the project’s pump station and water treatment plant. The events celebrated the incredible amount of study and hard work that brought the project to this point. They also recognized the regional cooperation among Union County, the Town of Norwood, and Stanly County that made it all possible.

The project team expects construction to begin in fall 2020. Please visit the Construction page for details.

July 2020 | FERC Approves Lake Use Permit Application

This summer, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the project’s Lake Use Permit application after a thorough, ten-month review. The approval followed a Finding of No Significant Impact, or FONSI, in an independent Environmental Assessment.

To complete the process, Duke Energy will issue an easement to give the project permission to construct the water intake within the boundaries of Duke Energy’s Yadkin-Pee Dee Hydroelectric Project.
